Medicinal properties of Tulsi (Basil) - The Ayurvedic Plant



General Introduction 

                                      Tulsi also known as Basil is a medicinal plant. Its botanical name is Ocimum sanctum .Tulsi is planted in every house in India. People in India have been worshiping Tulsi for centuries. For Indians Tulsi is not just a plant but they consider it a goddess. There are also many mythological stories related to this belief of Indians which claim Tulsi to be divine.



Scientific Aspect

                                     India's thousands of years old medical system i.e. Ayurveda is as reliable and effective today as it was thousands of years ago. Now, along with India, western nations have also adopted it. Various branches of modern science and medicine have also recognized the authenticity of Ayurveda.


Medicinal Uses Of Basil -

                                             Every part of the basil plant is helpful in protecting against some disease. Some of its uses are as given below -


1. Boil leaves of basil with cinnamon, cloves, ginger and jaggery and make a decoction by drinking it, it increases the immunity of the body.


2. Indians use basil leaves in their homes in everyday life. They also use its leaves while making tea. Making tea of ​​its leaves helps to cure common cold and throat infection.


3. Eating basil leaves every morning does not cause diseases of teeth and gums. If there is already an infection in the teeth, after drying its leaves, grinding and brushing with its paste, diseases like pyorrhea are cured.


4. Keep basil roots in water overnight and using it in the morning keeps the level of insulin in the body under control, which is beneficial for diabetic patients.


5. Applying grinded basil leaves (with few drops of lemon juice ) on the face provides relief from acne and  pimples and gives a natural glow on the face.

6. Chewing 8-10 leaves of basil daily reduces stress and helps in purifying blood.
